What does it mean to ‘get your colours done’?

Ever heard of “getting your colours done”? TikTok may have revived the trend, but the practice of matching complexions to colour palettes has been popular for over fifty decades.

But what does it take to get your colours done - whatever that means - and why would you do it?

So, what does “getting your colours done” actually mean?

Susan Axford has been a colour consultant and stylist for 25-years through her own business Your Style, based in Auckland and offering mobile services throughout the North Island.

She says the practice of “getting your colours done” simply means “finding out whether you have a warm or cool undertone to your skin, and which colours will enhance you and make you look your best.”

“Colour is the no cost part of your wardrobe - if you’re buying a T-shirt, it will be the same price if you buy navy or pink, so why not wear the colour that suits you?”

What happens during a colour analysis?

A series of colour swatches are needed to determine the right palette for you during a colour analysis.

Axford says she drapes her clients in fabric to “firstly determine whether they have a warm or cool undertone.”

A series of colour swatches are needed to determine the right palette for you during a colour analysis.
“Once that is determined, more colour swatches are draped to find out which of the warm or cool categories suit them best.
